It is composed by two coats of welding metal which cover a copper core.
Trifoil is used for welding carbides in order to ease the stress due to the different thermal expansion between the carbide and the metal base caused by the cooling down of welding temperature.
The trifoil choice depends on the basic metals, its use, its temperature and the carbide dimensions.
The welding of small pieces (>12,5 mm) doesn't always require trifoil. Its use for brazing big pieces prevents the carbide from cracking and bulking.
